I loved this beautiful little book, Foster by Clair Keegan, for its clear-eyed map of a young girl lost in a family mess, and how she blossoms with just a bit of care and affection during a summer away with some kindly relatives. Keegan is economical with her words, letting us feel the girl’s heart bloom, and we sense how easily it closes again when she is taken away from them.
I had just such an aunt and uncle, and I loved my short summers at their house. They gave me love and “normal” which gave me hope for the rest of the year. This book reminded me of them.
My book, Redeemed, A Memoir of a Stolen Childhood will be published June 25, 2024.
